Today when we woke up it was raining. We were all bright eyed and bushy tailed as we loaded the bus at 7:45am. But as the morning progressed we all started to feel the effects of our busy week. For our morning break we stopped at McDonald’s. During our break we presented the autographed sign to our bus driver. As we drove down the highway we dropped kids off in Kansas City and Topeka. While driving between Topeka and Salina all of us started singing songs to keep their minds off of saying goodbye. Singing and laughing the whole way home made the ride go by so much faster. When we arrived in Salina we were in shock because we finally realized that we had to say goodbye. Some tears were shed and lots of memories made. The friendships made on this trip will last forever.

Today we had fun: playing traveling Pictionary, Josh likes word plays, had a pillow fight on the bus, Josh’s laugh is girly and hysterical, interesting experiences at gas stations, sleeping pictures of everyone (even Deb and Josh), everyone sleeping on everyone, Cale going to Bob Evans by himself (cause everyone else was afraid to get sick again), Trent and Krista wiping water on each other, and Jonny using a zebra snuggy. As you can tell it was a long and entertaining day on the bus. At reflections we talked about what we like most about this trip. Hearing everyone talk you could tell we all learned a lot, made new friends, and had a fun time. It was also sad since we will be parting ways tomorrow. It will be the worst day of all; saying goodbye.

Today was our last day at the National 4-H Center. Along with all of the other delegations that participated this week in Citizenship Washington Focus. After we said all of our good buys with the other delegations, we started our long journey back to Kansas. At our last sight that we were going to see as a delegation, Monticello was a site for sore eyes. Along the way we encountered heavy traffic which set us back an hour but did not damper our spirits. When we arrived at Monticello, the delegation started our tour right away. We learned that one of Thomas Jefferson’s cook slaves name was “suck”, the dining room in his house was painted blue up until two years ago. There was testing done which figured out that the house dining room wall color was actually yellow. Now when you order that color of yellow it is called Monticello Yellow. At the age of 62 he felt that his algebra was not where it should be so he relearned it. After the tour we headed back on the bus for a four hour bus ride to Charleston, West Virginia. Once there most of our group headed to the mall for a bite to eat and some shopping. When everyone met for reflections the girls agreed that most guys look good in a teal blue shirt. The group also agreed that going through the Appalachian Mountains made our ears pop, which was annoying, and had some very beautiful and breathtaking views. As reflections wrapped up everyone went to their rooms to rest for the long day tomorrow.

I think I might possibly have the best day to write about. Delegation Day! This morning we awoke bright eyed and bushy tailed to load the bus at 7:45am. After all 39 delegates, 4 sponsors, 1 bus driver, and 1 CWF PA loaded we hit the road for a long day on the town. We started our morning at the Air Force Memorial, which over looked the point in the pentagon were the plane of 9-11-2001 struck. This memorial was one of the simplest monuments we toured but it was also breathtaking and had a lot of symbolism to it. After the Air Force Memorial we drove over to the Pentagon. We had the opportunity to look around the 9-11-2001 Memorial. We were not allowed to take any pictures at the Pentagon so if there is a lacking of pictures that is why :-). The Pentagon Memorial was a very hard thing to walk through. I was in the 3rd grade when this happened over 10 years ago. As we walked through the memorial you could see it on everyone’s face, they were all remembering that day. After we walked through the memorial we toured the Pentagon. We all got through Security ok (I am not sure what I was expecting exactly but it was nothing like the movies!) We got an awesome tour by two Navy Soldiers who were a part of the Honor Guard.

Following that we were dropped off at the National Mall with a map; told to stay in groups, not to get hurt, and be back at 4pm :-). It wasn’t that bad. We all split up into groups of four or more to tour parts of the National Mall that we had not seen! Groups went to several of the Smithsonian Museums, National Archives, Old Post office, shopping, and if you walked fast and prioritized you could maybe do all four! To say the least by the end of the day we were tired! But the night didn’t end there! We arrived back at the 4-H Center just in time for supper. After supper we had our final delegation meeting with Michelle, were we gave her our “Basket of Goodies” from back home! Following that we had an outstanding talent show were Kansas was well represented! I think the rest of the delegations were impressed with how much talent Kansas has! Kansas had four Performers: Hannah Sang, Cherokee danced, Emily played the piano, and Chad brought the house to its feet with his singing and piano playing! Showing how Kansas 4-H: “Rocks the House!” That was followed by a dance were there was lots of “Bernie Dancing” and what not. We came back to our rooms exhausted but loving our delegation even more. We are truly blessed to be from a great state with such tremendous 4-Hers!

Congressional Session, National Cathedral, and Dinner Cruise. Today we started off with a little later of a morning. Yeah for sleeping in!! We then went to a strategy workshop in which we discussed problems with the four bills we have been working on. We then took those problems to a congressional session and had a debate. This was just like a real congressional session. After lunch, we had a little free time. We then left and went to the National Cathedral; it is ten stories tall and very beautiful! We took a guided tour there and seen several different things. It included: a stained glass that had a 4-H Clover in it, very impressive designs, and Helen Keller’s tomb. After that we went back to the 4-H Center and got ready for our cultural heritage evening. The girls were getting all dolled up so some of the guys wanted to join in! Johnny and Austin E. both got some mascara and they were looking gorgeous! The entire group was all dressed up and looking very elegant. For our evening we took a dinner cruise on the Potomac River. We ate pizza, danced, and took tons of pictures on the open top of the boat. It was extremely fun! We even had the wedding ceremony on the boat. We then rode the subway (Metro). It was a new experience for most of us. We then walked like a mile from the closet stop to DC Cupcakes! We didn’t get to eat our cupcakes until we got back to the 4-H Center, but now we can say we have all been to and eaten DC Cupcakes! We then walked all the way back to the subway and took it two more times, Stetson and Brandon followed Amelia around and sang to her all night, it was so funny! Kansas just makes things super fun! We then got to take a metro bus, after that and our boys were definitely looking out for all of us. Finally we got back to the 4-H center and ate our delicious DC cupcakes. We were late for curfew, which the security guard was not happy about. O well, it was all worth it!

Today was our earliest day so far on our CWF trip. We left by 7:30am for our adventure filled day! We toured the Capitol building in our spiffy attire and some of our boys with aviators or “avatars” sunglasses were our agents for the day. LOL! After that we had a very educational and informing discussion with senators Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts. One of the questions was concerning their plans for the 2012 Farm Bill. We also asked their opinions on standardized testing and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Both were so honest and had a lot to say about each topic. I think most would agree joking around with Pat Roberts for the day was by far the best part. The Library of Congress was on our big list of events for the day. Inside was home of the Gutenberg Bible and some of the books from Thomas Jefferson’s Library. Our day was horribly warm and humid. Definitely not cool with our professional suits on! Next we split into our House of Representative Groups and went to visit each one. Representative Huelskamp was very informative on the Farm Bill and the other topics he is working on. He also told the group that he was a former 4-Her as well. We then walked over to the Supreme Court Building to meet up with the rest of the group and see where the Justices meet. The Supreme Court Building had two big fountains out front and they looked like very tempting swimming pools! We were all drying from the heat. The other groups met with: Lynn Jenkins, Mike Pompeo, and Kevin Yoder. They all said they had similar experiences as our group; very energetic and informative interactions with them and all encouraged us to stay involved in our Kansas communities. Finally after all that walking, we went to Union Station for supper. Next we moved onward to the Kennedy Performing Arts Theater to watch Tony Ellis, a bluegrass style show. We wrapped up our evening by taking pictures at the Whitehouse and had our reflections on today’s events while on the way back to the National 4-H Center. We all agreed that it was a fun and informative day despite the weather. We all hope the weather is extremely cooler tomorrow. A personnel P.S. from the blogger! Happy Birthday Cherokee!! This morning we visited the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery. At the FDR Memorial our PA Michelle explained to us that the four rooms with the memorial represent his 4 terms at president. This was because He wanted a memorial that was no bigger than his desk. So his memorial was to focus on his presidency, not just on him. We all wanted to take so many pictures that we left eight minutes late, Marietta and Michelle weren’t pleased. At the Arlington National Cemetery, our amazing tour guide pointed out vast amounts of information about the cemetery. He showed us all the sections within the cemetery that were just for: the Vietnam War, World War II, Nurses, Civil War, and a section for unknown soldiers. And very detailed information on how the cemetery was formed. Every direction you looked there were tombs and markers and in the newer sections they were aligned perfectly. After that we went to see the changing of the guards at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. It was absolutely still and silent while we watched them, with exception of cameras clicking like crazy. I was personally awed by the dedication and commitment the guards have to their job. Next thing we visited in the cemetery was the John F Kennedy Memorial. We saw the eternal flame and the graves of the Kennedy Family. At the top of the steps at the JFK Memorial we also had a little surprise. Someone had puked and it hadn’t been cleaned up yet. YUCK!
This afternoon we had bill writing workshops, and the Derby. The Derby was when everyone went outside and we all played games and burned off some energy for an hour. We played bucket ball, ships and sailors, sharks and minnows, and queen of the courts. It was a lot of fun but it sooooooo humid so we all sweated! We also got our briefing for Capitol Hill Day tomorrow and we are all very excited :-)!

As we loaded the bus this morning we almost got hit by the milk truck on our way to Mt. Vernon, which woke us all up. Mt. Vernon was amazing. The tour through the house was very intriguing and the view of the Potomac River was beautiful. The squirrel there was cute, friendly and photogenic. George Washington was keeping a careful eye on all of the Kansas 4-Hers as they made their way to the gift store.
Don then drove us to Iwo Jima Memorial and it was back to the 4-H Center for a late lunch. Workshops were attended by all delegates. This is where we learned what position we held on Bills being discussed this week. After workshops it was off to Committees. On the Health Committee we found out tomorrow it is suppose to be a high of 87 degrees, good chance of rain and for the tip; take an umbrella with you.
After an early dinner it was off to a night view of Washington DC. Michelle was informative and enjoyed laughs with us all. “Did you feel the electricity through the tunnel?” First stop was WWII, next to Vietnam Veterans, then Lincoln and Korean Memorials. Capt. Don then escorted us over to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. Here we were able to see a straight view of the White House.
On our way back to the 4-H Center everyone felt the need for pizza after all their “walking”. Capt Don told us he would stop for a fee, but PA Michelle informed him NO! During reflections Marietta shared “Josh Morris” attempted to start a food fight with her, by throwing ketchup at her during dinner!

Hello everyone from Washington D.C. Today was our first day at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. We first started the day off by waking up early and heading to the Gettysburg Civil War Museum, we all got to take a peep into the gift shop, and some even bought at souvenir or two. We had a little time to explore the museum before we watched a short film over the Gettysburg Address. Then above the theater they have a cyclotron, it is a 360 degree painting with a light show depicting the Gettysburg Battle. Next we all boarded back onto the bus and got to have our own personal tour guide, Ted W., rode with us and took us for a deeper look into the Gettysburg Battlefield. He really got into the information and was very passionate about educating us all about this site. We all agreed that he was a fantastic tour guide! As we finished up our tour, we then departed for D.C. We had a great time on the bus singing to one of our chaperones, Josh, as it was his birthday today. We finally arrived to the National 4-H Center around 3:30pm (Eastern Time). As we all settled into our rooms and got situated, dinner was just around the corner. We had a first great meal, not to mention the free ice cream that is served for lunch and dinner too :-)! As we went to our opening ceremony, Kansas rocked the house and did our cheer! The chant is: “Kansas!! Who rocks the House; I say Kansas rocks the house! And when Kansas rocks the house we rock it all the way down!” We love the accents people have around here, especially the delegates from Wisconsin. We all got a great laugh out of this joke that they told at the opening ceremony: “What do you call a one-eyed deer? No I deer!” Get It? (Say the punch line very slowly and listen to how it sounds) HA HA HA! We then split up into groups for our committees and workshops that we will work together in for the rest of the trip. During these we got to know more delegates and our PA’s (Program Assistants). Later on that night we had a pin trading ceremony where you could trade any item that represents your state. As we wrapped the night up, we had our nightly reflections and talked about our plans for tomorrow. We did this with our wonderful PA, a native Kansan and CWF Alumni, Michelle Hill! Keep us all in your thoughts as two of us recover from bad food sickness and that we have a safe and wonderful experience here. We would all like to say: Happy Fathers Day to all the dads! We miss you dearly! Have a great night!

Today we were up way to early! At 7:05am Eastern time (6:05am Central time) we had to have already eaten breakfast and have our bags loaded on the coach. To say the least we were dragging this morning. Once we were loaded up we started our long journey to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Along the way many activities took place such as: sleeping, eating, watching movies, and playing cards. Also a couple of delegates had an even longer bus ride; they got sick from last’s night food. They must be complemented and commended because they made it thru the day and did not complain once, it was oblivious they were not going to be stopped from making it to Washington D.C. Along the road from Ohio to Pennsylvania, was arguably some of the most breathtaking parts of America. The scenery was astonishing: mountains, trees (mainly due to quantity compared to home), farms, lakes, and tunnels through mountains. We arrived in Gettysburg around 4pm eastern time. After checking into our hotel we were given free time in old town/down town Gettysburg where we explored the Gettysburg National Cemetery. After finishing up there we broke off in to smaller groups to grab a bite to eat and check out all the shops! After a long day of adventures we came back to the hotel for swimming where a group of delegates attempted to do our Kansas cheer stunt in the water. You can imagine how this might have gone; KAN……splash, splash, splash……LOTS OF LAUGHTER!! Thank goodness the water was there to break the fall. The group then got together for reflections of the day and to discuss plans for tomorrow. During reflections you could sense the anticipation of the next day, arrival at the National 4-H Center and participation in the main activities of our trip. Now for a good night of sleep!!

Day 2

New adventures were had by all. The group visited the top of the St. Louis Arch. A few of the delegates and chaperones even got stuck in the tram on the way down from the top! The arch stands 630ft in the air and it is very majestic to look down and see the mighty Mississippi River flowing and the people standing on its banks. Most of the day was spent on the bus, even longer due to the “wonderful road construction” near the Illinois and Ohio boarders. During today’s bus ride all of the delegates put their heads together and came up with the Kansas chant. The chant is: “Kansas!! Who rocks the House; I say Kansas rocks the house! And when Kansas rocks the house we rock it all the way down!” This chant will be used for the opening ceremonies at the National 4-H Center. We settled in for the night at Grove City, Ohio and are all looking forward to the next stop in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Today was the first day of many. Everyone got on the bus thinking the same thing: “Where am I going to sit and who am I going to sit with?” Once everyone was on the bus we started our long journey together. The more people became comfortable with each other the easier it became to talk. Before we knew it we were crossing the Kansas/Missouri border and we had made new friends. Upon arriving at the hotel we received our keys and went off to explore. Later the group went to Union Station and found a variety of things to do. They ranged from dancing to the electric slide, buying various amounts of fudge at the fudge factory, and a few of the delegates got fake tattoos. There was also a whispering arch where you could stand on one side and another person could stand 30ft away on the other side of the arch. And with nothing more than a whisper you could hear each other as if they were standing right next to you. The group then headed back to the hotel so most of the delegates could see a glimpse of the St. Louis Arch at night. When the night glimpse ended we met for reflections of the day and plans for tomorrow. During reflections the group agreed that Don, our bus driver, was one of the best. So until the next adventure: Make the Best Better!

The morning started off with sad good-byes to all our fellow CWFer's. We boarded our bus to begin our long journey home. we started off the day with naps and after a few hours watched the emotional movie World Trade Center. That caused a few tears. We stopped for lunch at Washington, Pennsylvania choosing from Arby's, Panera Bread, McDonald's, or Walmart. (You can tell it's a non touring day because we're listing our selection of restaurants) We lightened the mood with the comedy She's the Man and FINALLY reached our destination in Dayton, Ohio.
They said that there were restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, but we found a six lane highway in the row, so we had to track down Don, the driver, to take us to get some grub. Some ate at Arby's & spent 2 1/2 hours in the pool, while others spent 2 hours in the Olive Garden sharing some laughs. Finally, we ended the night with a meeting by the pool, and learning that we get to sleep in an extra hour before heading out again.

A week of no sleeping is finally catching up to all of us, but we all got up early and headed to the Pentagon! To get to the Pentagon, some of us experienced our first subway ride (we had a little bit of trouble working the ticket machine). Once we got the tickets, we loaded up, some almost didn't make it in the door! Once getting to the Pentagon, we had to run because they almost cancelled our tour. During the tour we visited the 911 memorial, walked through the 235th birthday party of the U.S. Army, and walked around the whole perimeter of the Pentagon.
Once the tour was over we hopped back on the subway headed back to the bus, and on to the mall via our bus. We then had a free day. Some spent the day shopping or visiting the museums like the Holocaust, Air & Space, or the National Archives. Yet others went to the Hard Rock Cafe, or got conned into buying some great deals at the store by a salesman.
We met at 4 O'clock to head back to a subway then tried getting on a bus (there were lots of states trying to get on the bus). It took three buses to get us all back. Some of us got on free since the driver got irritated that it took too long, which was a good deal for those that didn't have to pay.
Upon returning to the national 4-H Center we dropped our bags and rushed to dinner which happened to be a cookout. After dinner we met as a delegation one last time to fill out surveys about the week's events. We also presented our gift basket to our amazing PA , Aly. I think KAMO got to her because not only was she wearing her "I Love Beef" pin on her headband, but she also vowed to hang the "Eat Beef" license plate in her room. All rather funny considering she is a vegetarian.
Following delegation wrap up was the talent show, opened by Ashley Fitzimmons singing a beautiful National Anthem. Rebekah blew the crowd away with her musical skills and Bryan and Cain provided chuckles with their comedy routines. Surprise act of the night was Harrison who beat boxed Free Bird by request. Finally we danced the night away and packed and hit the hay.

Thursday started off with breakfast in the Clover Cafe. MMMmmm! No complaints there. There are always 3 to 4 choices at every mealtime and they're all fabulously yummy! Good thing that we get a lot of exercize.

We headed to our daily workshops. After that, most of us found our bills returned from the government committee either accepted, revised, or completely redone. We then had the choice to accept their changes or debate our side at Congressional Session. My workshop chose to deny and debate our side, which is to take physical education out of schools (because it calls for more government funding, excludes those with disabilities, schools would need more teachers to give assistance to such kids, this takes time away from core classes and such activities can be done after school hours and given to those with interest and/or ability). I think it all went really well. Many people had questions about the bills, laughs were had too!

Today was also the last day of committee meetings. Everyone was hurrying to finish last minute tasks. The communications and public relations committee finished up the last of their presentations. We're looking forward to reading their newspaper, and seeing the slideshow and video they've put together for tomorrow night!

Our cultural heritage evening was tonight also. We went to a dinner theater to see "Hairspray". We all looked quite lovely, if I do say so myself.

The show was amazing. We all had a blast.

Today was another good day. As expected, we rose up early to start our day with some breakfast before heading to Capital Hill. The Capital Hill experience was started off with a guided tour of the Capital building. One guide happened to be a current student at the University of Kansas.... which was very ironic. Here's a fun fact for you, the President can't enter the Capital Building unless invited by a Senator.
The MO. + KS. delegations were split up to go to their respective Senator and Representative meetings. The highlight of the MO. kids' visit was the meeting with Rep. Blaine Luetkenmeyer. The meeting with Senators Brownback and Roberts didn't go quite as planned where as Senator Roberts was sick. Brownback mostly talked about the oil spill and the healthcare bill. The Kansas Delegation then split up according to their districts to meet with their Representatives.
We then ate supper at the Union Station. Then, we went to the Kennedy Center and watched a very interesting modern dance production. After, we returned, we had free time, where some used it to play cards, basketball, volleyball and other games. Most everyone is tired, but also very excited to see Hairspray tomorrow, and ready for another fun filled day of DC festivities.

Today was the third day of adventures and much longer for those delegates who traveled long distances to reach the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. If I may say so, today was the most awe-inspiring thus far.
We headed to Iwo Jima, Arlington, and the FDR Memorials all before lunch. Our P.A. told us a true story about a man that stood at the bottom of the Iwo Jima Memorial to pay respects to his father. Our bus driver, Don, drove the round-about around the monument that honors the lost in the battle for Iwo Jima, Japan. The story told of each of the six men raising our proud flag. Three of the six made it home - most of them as young as seventeen. The story definitely struck reality into our hearts, most of us the exact age of the fallen.
While FDR told of Roosevelt's Presidency, Arlington pulled heart strings as we saw the tomb stones stretched out as far as our eyes could see, standing in perfectly straight lines. What got many of us the most, was watching the changing of the guartd and spotting a fallen hero being lead to his or her final resting place. Leading just ahead was this person's family, including two small children. We'll never forget sights like these.
We arrived back at the National 4-H Center for our workshops and committee meetings. Many of us worked on writing bills in our workshops to be sent to the government committees for discussion and improvements.
Town Hall was presented to us tonight. We were split into groups and given topics for discussion, just like in an actual town hall meeting. Many of the topics got pretty heated (like abortion and the legal drinking age), and when everything had been said and done early, some brought up an interesting question: crunchy or smooth peanut butter?
Fun was had by all at the Derby this afternoon! Many activities were set up by the Healthy Living Committee (Thanks Guys!).
We learned how to make a "smart" action plan and follow through in our delegate group meeting. We had to plan out a first date. Randy had his first date on paper! Let's hope he had a lovely time.
We also received our CWF Polos tonight. Hopefully we'll get to wear them to the Air Force Band tomorrow, providing that it doesn't rain.
Oh, and do you hear that noise? Sounds like it's a game of extreme spoons in the hall tonight! :)

Our day began with an awesome breakfast at the Clover Cafe, which is stationed on the National 4-H Center campus. Afterwards we boarded the bus and headed to the home of our nation's first President, George Washington. As we drove to Mount Vernon, our P.A. Aly, showed us sights and told us stories of the areas we traveled through.
When we arrived at Mount Vernon we had to wait in line for forever and a day! But boy was that wait worth it. Mount Vernon was immense and beautiful. The outside was made of wood that was notched and covered with sand to look like bricks. One of the delegates noted that Washington's bed chambers were plain and white, while all the guest chambers were bright and exquisitely furnished. Another comment was that the view was amazing! When we were asked to compare Mount Vernon and Monticello, it was unanimous that our delegation preferred Mount Vernon. Some of the similarities we found between the two included the bright green dining rooms ant that both plantations were agriculture based. The green walls were said to show off wealth and assist in digestion. Along with the similarities there were differences between the two. These included the materials that were used to build and the size of the estates.
Once we were finished venturing through the house, we were turned loose to explore the grounds. Some of the sites we took in were the wharf, the old barn, and the grave site of the Washington family. As we neared the end of our visit, we went to the theater which showed the battles that Washington participated in. The theater even snowed! Our visit came to a close and we headed back to the 4-H Center for lunch.
After lunch, we all attended our workshop and committee meetings. In the Government committee, Blake, Ronni and Tori were all elected to leadership positions for the congressional session. Ben Bellar was elected head of the week's video. Rebekah and Cain auditioned for the talent show.
When we finished supper, we went on our "Night View" of D.C. The similarities we noted in all of the memorials was the relation to Greek and Roman architecture. Part way through our tour it began to rain. However, it was right as we viewed the Korean War Memorial. We all thought it was neat to see the names at the Vietnam Memorial. It made us all proud to be Americans!

We were able to get a slightly later start this morning, since it was Sunday and breakfest didn't start until 7:00 instead of 6:00, we didn't leave until 7:40. On the bus, we counted off, practiced the chant, and then we were off to Colonial Williamsburg!
We arrived a Colonial Williamsburg at 8:56. Mysteriously, we got two tour guides to show us the Court House, Where we had the amazing justices Tiana, Ronnie, Brittany, and Rebecca. Ashley was the law expert. Harrison was our stand in jury, and Garret our Sherrif. The case was of petty theivery, of myself stealing a chicken from Amanda. I was found guilty, after Garret banged his big stick against a hard block, and I was sentenced to either the head lock, the foot lock, or whipping. While I thought the head lock would be the best, our tour guide convinced me that whipping would be faster, and I would be able to hold my reputation.

Afterwards, we were guided through the Mayor's Palace, and the Jail. Afterwards, we had an hour to tour the town.

After departing, we arrived at a Travel Store at 1:00 P.M. We had the option to eat at Pizza Hut, Popeyes, or the Reasturant. We left at 2:00.

We arrived at the National 4-H center around 5:00. Immediately, we met Ally, who is our Program Assistant, and we met in our delegation room, the Anderson Room.

At 6:30, the opening assembly started with a bang from the Kansas and Missouri delegation, as we ignited the assembly with our amazing chant, as well as various cheers as we competed against the other states for cheering dominence. We definatly won.

As the flags entered, we cheered and honored our flag and then cheered for our program assistant. We then broke into our workshop groups.

After the workshop groups and committee groups, we met for a pin exchange and social. We enjoyed meeting delegates from 8 other states. We enjoyed the Cupid Shuffle, the Cha Cha Slide and a massive fist pumping session because we love to party.

Afterwards, we had reflections.

Interesting facts:

Our P.A. is a vegetarian.

There are some 4-H groups that don't show animals.

Williams burg was Hot, just because we didn't know if you expected it or not.

Williamsburg was pawned Montechellio.

And Eric (A.K.A. Brick) and Brittiny are awesome flag carriers.

The day began in West Virginia and another long day of traveling was in store for us. To pass the long hours of the mountain drive, in the morning we watched Night at the Museum 2. We were also informed by Ben that "this is the farthest West I've been." After a morning of travel, we finally arrived at our first event, "Monticello", the estate of President Thomas Jefferson. However, because of a "Severe Storm", our tour was postponed. Once the storm passed, we were finally allowed to tour the house. Some of the interesting facts that we learned about Jefferson is that he ran his estate while creating a nation, that he disliked slavery, but owned slaves. He brought his cook to Paris to learn the "French" way of cooking, and he slept sitting up. The gardens and scenery around Monticello were beautiful and it was cool to walk where our former President walked. Another awesome feature of the estate was the beds. The overall experience gave us more respect for President Jefferson.
Because of the rain delay, we arrived to hotel an hour late. After moving into our rooms, we went to eat at Bob Evans. The food was good, but the service was terrible. Another long day of travel has come to an end and tomorrow we will reach our final destination, Washington, D.C.

Today after loading and heading off from Salina at 8:45, we began our journey. After eating at 10:45 at Hardee's in Topeka, we picked up more delegates and soon discovered that the toilet on the bus was broken. The real fun started after picking up more delegates in Kansas City. We kept entertained by playing B.S., Apples to Apples, and Frogger. After picking up the final delegates in Columbia Missouri, we finally reached our hotel in Collinsville, Illinois around 6:20. We settled into our rooms and set out for food. Some enjoyed shakes from Steak N' Shake, and dinner at the hotel. Later, delegates either enjoyed the pool, or hanging with new friends in their rooms. Carly Anderson

Today we woke up as the sun rose and had an excellent breakfast in our last hotel. Throughout the morning all of us were happy to sleep while others watched a movie Second Hand Lions.

After our first stop we all had a say on our most memorable experiences. Some things included the following:
...crazy Jessica wanting to be painted green and called a gummy
...Oklahoma musical
...Gettysburg
...Twilight tattoo
...eating pumpernickel bread
...and so much more.

We've all had memorable times and now have new friends. I think we're more like a family, though.

We did various things on the bus ride home and when we reached the border of Kansas, Marietta gave us her closing talk. She told us how proud she is of us from throughout the trip from leadership, the talent show, and just being GREAT kids.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened by Dr. Seuss was the thought of the day. All of us hate to say our good-byes, especially to our awesome bus driver, Mike. As we now head our separate ways, I will say the last and final goodbye, saying thanks to great friends in my mind and new found citizenship in my heart. I LOVE YOU EVERYONE!

As the sun shined through the windows, we began our very hectic morning with saying our many goodbyes and scrambling to finish our packing. We all eventually filed onto the bus and found our seats for the long 13 hour ride to Indianapolis. Some fell asleep immediately after leaving the 4-H Center. Others took a few minutes but it didn't take long before the entire bus fell silent.

After our first break many of us worked to watch Failure to Launch, but we voted to make it fair. At lunch we stopped in Washington, PA. After lunch we all voted to watch another movie and we chose Flight Plan. After the movie we took a break to stretch our legs and fill up the bus with fuel. After our stop many began to play the game "I've never" and sing songs.

We all made the best out of our very long ride, but we were all glad to arrive in Indianapolis. We all enjoyed sitting outside playing cards, talking and swimming.

Many of us are sad that the trip will come to an end tomorrow, however, the memories and friendships will most assuredly last a lifetime and never be forgotten.

“Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep” to everyone not on this trip. Those are just words, but to the Kansas CWF Delegation, that is the noise that forces us awake for the start of Day 10. Sleepy eyed and half awake, we all boarded the bus to head to the Pentagon, all armed with ID’s as Marietta often reminded us to do.

To start our journey we had to ride the Metro from Pentagon City to the Pentagon. Upon arrival we went through security and were sent to a waiting area. From there we proceeded to our tour destination. During our tour we saw 9/11 quilts that were donated to the Pentagon by people who lost loved ones in the terrorist attack.

After finishing our tour several of us went to the gift shop to purchase keepsakes and t-shirts. Soon we were on the Metro again and heading back to Pentagon City where our fantastic bus driver, Mike, was waiting for us.

Shortly after leaving Pentagon City we all headed to the Holocaust Museum where we saw the persecution that the Jews suffered and died from. I think everyone will agree with me when I say it was a mind blowing and shocking experience that we will not soon forget.

Upon finishing our tours at the Holocaust Museum we all set off in groups to explore D.C. Some went to the Museum of Natural History, others to the Air & Space Museum and some other museum.

At 2:30 we met up at the National Archives to view the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, The Constitution and several others. Soon after viewing these we met at the Old Post Office Museum and Pavilion to take the Metro and Metro Bus back to the 4-H Center.

At our delegation meeting Darielle had us fill out evaluations about CWF and Marietta talked about checking out in the morning.

Immediately following the meeting we had the 2009 CWF Talent Show. Kaitlyn Dewell sang “I Think About You”, Blake McAllister showed off his juggling skills, and Michelle Waymire sang “God Bless The U.S.A.” Soon after the Talent Show was over the Kansas Delegation gathered to hear the talents of Wes Gardener on someone else’s violin. Once he finished we all scattered to enjoy dancing, showers and packing.

Reflections:
- The Pentagon tour was great!
- Our tour guide walked backwards, really fast
- The Holocaust Museum was shocking, moving, frightening
- The National Archives was fantastic
- Darielle was a great P.A.
- The Dance was totally spiffalicious

It was a beautiful HOT day in D. C. We were all dressed for success as we toured Arlington National Cemetery. For most it was surreal, heart warming and breath taking all at once.

After touring the cemetery we took a drive to the Iwo Jima and WWII Memorials where we all had a great deal of respect.

After dinner we all went to the congressional session where we voted on our bills that we had previously made up earlier in the week.

This evening we went to a Dinner Theater for supper and a musical. We got to see “Oklahoma”. All of the Jessica’s thought Curly was the best looking of them all!!!!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Okay, there was only one bad time and it really wasn’t that bad. As the Healthy Living Committee predicted the weather was very sultry and hot. Beads of sweat from Kansas 4-H'ers were flooding the streets.

Most of the day was devoted to Capitol Hill and visiting of our Senators and Rep- resentatives. The boys wore suit coats while the girls wore beautiful dresses and skirts. The group got a big head after receiving many compliments from other tourists and Capitol faculty. Basically, we were very fly and fresh.

The architecture and art in the Capitol was stupendous. Our southern tour guide explained that the marble within the Capitol came from 7 different countries. There were pictures in the dome that represented how our nation came about. The room with many statues echoed more than any other. An exciting event happened when some of us saw Nancy Pelosi walking by at a fast clip.

Next was talking to Senators Brownback and Roberts. They answered all of our questions and talked of their Kansas pride. Senator Brownback’s assistant said he will be running for Governor and is spending a lot of money. Senator Roberts does not like how our country is spending its money and its health care system.

It took a long time to be able to see Representatives Jerry Moran, Lynn Jenkins and Todd Tiahrt. They met us on the scorching steps of the Capitol and we took group pictures. The Supreme Court was fun, but hard to stay awake in. Mary Hoover fell asleep.

Later we went to a show called “Twilight Tattoo”. It was put on by the United States Army. It was so emotional that some of us shed tears. The soldiers, which included the United States Army Drill Team, were so very talented.

Reflections:
- We looked so professional that many of us were asked for directions by tourists
- Blake McAllister and Chris Sourk thought their suits were mixed up
- The Jonas Brothers were at the Capitol
- Larry Crouse met some folks from Ottawa, Kansas
- Jessica Brauer thought that being able to shake hands with members of the Army at the Twilight Tattoo ceremony was special.

Day 7: Tuesday, June 23, 2009

We awoke this early morning to the sun shining through our windows, unfortunately many of us did not welcome it with it’s joy as this is our seventh day with the lack of rest holding us back.

First thing this morning we pried open our eyes to attend the bill writing session. During this session each color group had the opportunity to come together and write a bill on a hot topic. Choices included gun control, ethanol use, file sharing, and government data mining. These bills then moved on to the government committee where they diligently worked to combine both sides for the Congressional session.

We then hurriedly loaded our coach only imagining how beautiful our National Cathedral could be. Once we arrived it was even more magnificent than any of us expected, leaving everyone speechless at the sight of the National Cathedral that our country comes to rely on in times of joy and even in times of trial and tribulation. The Cathedral made for the people and by the people expresses our country in many ways. As many generations have seen it rise into what it is today, they have contributed bits and pieces of their lives whether it is the bit of moon rock in the stained glass or the Darth Vader gargoyle placed on one of the spires atop the Cathedral.

After returning from the Cathedral our delegation started Action Plan Part 1. This was a time for our delegation to come up with action plans to make our communities a better place to live. During this time we split up into groups to make an action plan with issues including a first date, a prom, and giving a dog to every person in Kansas. This was a great time for all of us to brain storm and have fun with our fellow Kansans.

During the second part of the session it was time to get to work. While the adults backed away we took the reins and came up with incredible ideas that can make our community a better place to live. Feeling passionately about our chosen topics, each group presented a goal of what they wanted to accomplish. Our topics included mentoring, respect/discrimination, healthy living, under age drinking and parent involvement in fair projects. Steve McAllister said it was one of the best classroom environments he had seen.

Later on that day we all got into our very casual attire to have a fun filled hour of games and activities. During the Derby we split into color groups to compete in activities such as tug of war, sand volleyball and ultimate frisbee. Overall everyone really enjoyed the Derby.

Another great part of the day was the Town Hall that was put on by the Youth in Governance Committee where we split up into different groups and discussed current topics such as abortion, gay marriage, and off shore drilling. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this, seeing the many different views on these topics and having healthy debate on each topic.

We ended the day with a briefing about tomorrow’s adventurous day on Capitol Hill and free time. Overall it was a wonderful day in D. C.

Day 6: Monday, June 22, 2009

Today we opened our droopy eyes to find ourselves in our home away from home. We dressed in our best for today we went to Mount Vernon. Not very many of us have been to George Washington’s home until today. Just knowing we walked up the same flight of stairs and touched the same hand rail would make us open our minds to every single detail. In the house we all passed by the room where Washington took his last breaths, then we continued on to his final resting place which is also located on the estate. Along with Martha and 20 other family members. Unfortunately this great tour had to come to an end. On our way back from Mount Vernon we passed by several embassy’s such as Japan, Germany and Sweden. After we relaxed back into our casual attire we listened to Angela Wasko speak about challenging ourselves to get involved. Following Angela was Jake Johnson who told us to find our passion and choose how it will impact our lives.

A few hours later we hopped back on to our coach where Mike drove us safely through terrible city traffic. We arrived at the Jefferson Memorial first with a beautiful river front view of the Potomac. We eagerly jumped back on to the bus to visit the FDR Memorial. The memorial was a very calm and serene place because of all the waterfalls that were included in the memorial.

Onward we went to the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam War Memorial. As we walked around to these memorials our hearts never felt so warmed until we took our first steps down the long wall of names of men who died for us. As we returned back to our home away from home we all said good bye to one of our own. Today was Daniel Martin's last day with us.

Reflections:
All the memorials were fantastic!
We met some people from Kansas.

Day 5: Sunday, June 21, 2009

The white glossy pages coated with unending historic remarks slowly turn into a blur. Dates, names and events engulf each line as the text struggles to bring the past back to life. The pictures we have tried to create in our minds have finally become a reality. Text can not depict the things we have encountered.

As we peeked out of the covers this dreary morning, so did the sun. Our first adventure of the day was to tour Independence Hall. Our guide not only spoke words of truth, but spoke words from the heart that showed her passion. We then saw the Liberty Bell that demonstrated all the things our teachers have tried to teach us. Later we went to the Betsy Ross house where actors brought to life characters of the 1800’s. Next, we got to witness the Christ Church, where they were having Sunday worship services at the time.

For lunch many of us ventured out to have a well known “Philly Cheese Steak”. I still think my mom’s were better.

After loading the bus we drove through Delaware, while experiencing driving through tunnels (which were new to some). On the ride to Washington D.C. we practiced our State chants –

1) Bang bang, choo choo train,
come on Kansas do your thing,
wave the wheat, wave wave the wheat

2) Can I get a --- What, what,
can I get a --- who, who,
we’re going to keep our nation from rocking you!
We are --- So loud,
We are --- So proud,

Kansas 4-H --- HUH!!!

After checking into the conference center and having dinner, Kansas definitely rocked the house at the opening assembly with our cheers. We then were divided into color groups to attend work shop groups. Here we got to know each other and then discussed citizenship and what it meant to us. These meetings were then followed by committee meetings where we learned our duties as a delegate and began our planning. Our night still wasn’t over. Next we attended a pin trading “Meet & Greet” where we collected items from the other states and got to know each other. The evening was officially ended by a review of the day and covered tomorrow’s schedule.

Today was a day when the text books finally came to life. The past affects the future, and future learns from the past. We are the future experiencing the past.

The days reflections:
-Nice to meet new people since we’ve been stuck with the same people for 4 days.

Question: What began with a fantastic tour of a famous civil war battlefield, moved on to the most famous chocolate factory in the world and ended with an interactive show highlighting the "City of Brotherly Love" and a time for daily reflections? If you answered Day 4 of the annual Citizenship Washington Focus 4-H Trip, then congratulations, you are exactly right!

Though dreary, the fourth day of CWF did not disappoint, exceeding the previous days in both excitement and charm. 4-H'ers arose early to enjoy an excellent (and free!!!) Breakfast at our Gettysburg motel. Next, it was off to the Gettysburg Battle Museum where we watched a fascinating documentary on the Battle of Gettysburg and viewed a stunning cyclorama painting and light show summarizing the famous battle. Afterwards we were fascinated by a two hour tour of the Gettysburg battlefields that involved views from the bus and interactive off-road exploration by all.

After a short bus ride (that is, relative to what we’re used to), we arrived at a place most of had only dreamed of - Hershey, Pennsylvania. While there, we enjoyed a tasty lunch at the Kit Kat Café, attended a lesson on chocolate tasting, and received an excellent explanation of the chocolate making process. While earning our Masters Degree in chocolate tasting, our very own Chris Kartman was named a Professor of Tongue-ology, and fulfilled his duties by showing everyone where the different taste buds are located on the tongue. While loading the bus, Scott City 4-Hers were amazed to see a resident of their town, proving how small this world truly is.

Next, 4-H'ers traveled via coach to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, a suburb of Philadelphia, and got a small taste of traffic on the East coast. After supper we got to experience a phenomenal walk-through of the events leading up to the American Revolution through the “Lights of Liberty” show. Sites on the tour included Independence Hall, Franklin Court, and the Liberty Bell. All in all, the presentation primed us well for the Washington D.C. portion of our trip, and won’t soon be forgotten by anyone.

Reflections:

Many thoughts were expressed about the superb day. Among those mentioned most frequently were that the Civil War film was an amazing documentary, that the cyclorama exhibit was emotionally captivating and the statistics in it were staggering, and that the battlefield tour enabled visitors to picture the war visually.

Reactions to the Hershey’s tour included that the chocolate tasting was hilarious, that getting to “froth” our chocolate milk was grand, and that the singing cows on the tour had been well received. Also, chaperone Larry Crouse summarized the experience by saying, “ a bazillion little kids hyped up on chocolate is an insane zoo”.

Furthermore, Daniel Martin remarked that travel in Philadelphia was frustratingly slow.

Comments regarding the Lights of Liberty show were also positive and everyone was quite impressed.

In the end, the fourth day of CWF, though lacking in sunshine, was filled to the brim with laughter, fun, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. And if the trip thus far is any indicator, the good times have just begun. Tomorrow, the real fun starts when we arrive at our nations capital!

Hey, it's your favorite 4-Hers again, writing to you from Gettysburg, PA. It's been such an amazing day in the east. We're all bonding very well and have learned many important facts about our awesome country together.

The morning started out very gloomy. Also, there was a huge downpour which is something that half of us have never really seen. This all took place in a suburb of Columbus, OH. From here, the bus driver decided to take us off of the beaten path so that our viewing of the Appalachian Mts would be maximized.

Reflections:
Our trip was very beautiful from OH to PA. Like yesterday, it was a day mostly riding in the bus. Some interesting things happened at a few stops. When stopping for lunch in western PA, Wade Guiterrez tried to cross a rather busy street and about got hit by a F-150 pickup. The people in this group felt so grateful that he left the scene unharmed.

We all know the saying "Manure smells like money". Not all of us think it's a pleasant thought. Many sources have heard Jessica Brower say "manure smells great and just like home". Although we gave her some heck about it, she's just a great girl that loves her cattle.

Somewhere deep in the forest of the mountains, there was a card game of Egyptian Rat Killer being played in the back of the bus. The game consisted of Alex Spence, Blake McAllister, Andrew Fox and Morgan Lawrence. The interesting thing about this is that it lasted an hour and at the end someone's hand was broken!!! Okay, I'm just kidding. However, the teams were very exhausted.

Upon arriving in Gettysburg we were all set free. Almost the whole group went to the world renown Gettysburg Nat'l Cemetery. This was such a riveting experience. Some said this visit was an intense one, while others thought it was solemn and humbling.

Then it was on to the old downtown. People split up and went to many shops and restaurants. Kristen Fisher, Caitlin Young and Kendra Baumberger all had balloons made for them. Kaitlyn Dewell and Blake McAllister tried Birch Beer and it was really syrupy. Many of the Kansans ate Pumpernickel bread and got some for free.

Later in the night at the hotel, Steve McAllister entertained many with juggling.
Kaitlyn Dewell displayed the bend and snap.

Experiencing the different historical and cultural locations in the area has been mind-boggling. However, we are all very hungry for more and await arriving in Washington D.C.

As said before, we are all great friends now and are loving this sensational trip.

Day 2

We woke up at the crack of dawn so we could eat breakfast and start heading to the Gateway Arch. As soon as we got there we took our first group picture on the steps by the Arch. We then went through security and had the options of going to the museum or to the gift shop. After looking around for a while we got into groups of 5 to go up to the top of the Arch.
We got to the top and looked down at the heart of St Louis. We then went back down on the tram to go back to the coach. Once we were on the bus Marietta then told us some fun facts about St Louis. After that, Caitlin Conley and David Jones told us some of their Kansas chants to rock the house at the 4-H Center. We stopped in Effingham to eat and go to Wal-Mart if needed. We had to be back at 12:25 but a bunch of kids were late so Marietta started a new rule that if you're late you have to pay 25 cents to the petty cash box.

Sherry then read off 6 cards saying 3 truths and 1 lie about random people. After that, Spence picked out a movie and we watched "Taken" till we stopped in Indianapolis, Indiana for a bathroom break. Alex told us some random facts about 4-H. Majority ruled once again, so we watched National Treasure II. After driving for awhile we finally made it to Grove City, Ohio where we went to the hotel. Once
we got to the hotel we split up and went to eat. At 9:15 we got together for reflection time.

Reflections:
Marietta imitated 2 ladies laughing out in the lobby.
We went over fire rules.
Marietta made a new diddy!
We then went over tomorrow's game plan.
Alex got pooped on by a bird on his hand.
Daniel Martin got walked in on in a restaurant bathroom.
Jessica Brauer thought there could be more info at the top of the Arch.
Wade thought it should have been bigger at the top.
A group of guys went to White Castle and Chris Davis, being the architect that he is, made a tower out of empty hamburger boxes.
Dani Lockhart attempted to teach a group a Kansas chant.
Alex and Caitlin also taught a Kansas chant.

Day 1:

As we come from all corners of the state to Salina, and some to Topeka, to start our CWF journey to Washington D.C.

Once we were picked up in Salina we drove to Topeka and were joined by our eastern friends. We had lunch and started our trip to St Louis. On the way we did several different ice-breakers in which we got to meet new people. After we arrived in St Louis we went to Union Station. There we could shop, eat, or just take it easy. After eating a sandwich we looked around and stopped at "The Fudgery" where Tony demonstrated to us how to make fudge. It was very interactive and was a good time. All in all it was a long day, but provided a great start to what is going to be a fun trip.

Reflections, Bungee Cords at Union Station, crazy waiter at Hard Rock, and a psycho man with a purse and tight purple capri pants at a public bathroom.

We determined amongst our crew which girl had brought the most pairs of shoes, and which guy had the most non-family female contacts on his phone.

And the winners are:
Our very own Romeo with 108 female contacts is Blake McCallister and our very own Imelda Marcos who brought 11 pairs of shoes for a 12 day trip is Caitlin Conley!

The last day started off early once again. Everyone ate breakfast and was on the bus by 7:30am. We were all ready for the long bus ride. Everyone was so tired and ready to get home to sleep in their own bed. Emily, Andrea, Ann, and Emily decided no to sleep any last night so they were very tired. We have all became amazing friends and are sad to be leaving but ready to get home.

Wow it's hard to believe that today was our last full day together as a group. Our day started bright and early as we had to load the bus at 7:30am. Everyone was weary after having only a few hours of sleep. Even our trusty PA had overslept. Jennifer had collected an interesting assortment of goodies that was collected during the final room check. It appeared like most of the items had been collected from the girls' rooms! We spent our time on the bus watching movies and catching up on some much needed sleep. We arrived in Indianapolis at 7:30pm and were treated to a pizza party. We had our final reflections with everyone sharing their favorite memories from our time together. It is going to be good to get home but I think it is safe to say that everyone is going to miss their new friends.

On the last day in Washington D.C. we took an exciting metro ride to
L-Enfant Plaza. Where we then walked four blocks to get to the
Holocaust Museum. We were then shoved into a single file line to get
through security which, felt like we were being shoved onto box cars
just like the Jews were in World War II. Adam played a trick on Mary
and Marietta with the security at the Holocaust, Joe had said something
wrong and was taken to be detained.
To see the facts and pictures of the people who struggled will be hard
to describe to anyone. After we had went through the museum we decided
to split up into groups of four or more. We were told to be back at
5:30 p.m. When people split and went their own ways, Danielle was
almost left at the Holocaust Museum.
While we were out on our separate ways, Amber and Jessica said that the
4th of July parade was awesome. The drumline and bands were great, but
a lot of people were there. Hope said Jared tried to fly a plane and
that he needed to not be a pilot because he couldn't fly the plane.
Caitlin, Morgan, Lauren, and Catylin got lost in the National History
Museum. Amber reported that her, Emily, Meredith and Jessica had to
pay to get into a McDonalds bathroom. Molly happily said that she,
Susan, Lane, Elissa, Erika, Mariah, Heather and Aaron square danced in
the national mall. An embarrassed Jessica spilt hot tea all over Amber
at lunch. Aaron so got Mary Beth with his shocking gum, so don't ask
Aaron for gum. LOL. Shortly after that Lane got Mary Beth shocked with
his laser pen.
After everyone was done going to the museums and we walked in the rain
to the Jefferson Memorial it stopped raining and while we were sitting
and waiting JD fell asleep. They played the Star Spangled Banner twice
and a man got up and spoke to another group that was there, Lead
America. We all waited patiently in the rain, Joe bought ponchos for
the delegation. While waiting Aaron and Lane went to talk to Minnesota
friends a family from South Africa came and asked what 4-H was and what
it did, he told them. The delegation sang songs before the fireworks.
When the fireworks started they were fast and they came one after the
other. The whole thing lasted 20 minutes. Then we walked back to the
Plaza to get back on the metro. There was a long line so we had to
wait until it calmed down. We then rode the metro all the way back to
the bus stop. We then called Thomas to come pick us up and take us
back to the 4-H center.

July 3rd

Everyone, well all most everyone, woke up bright and early for the early bird activities this morning. While some people had the misfortunate opportunity to wake up to Lane's pounding on doors, others slept in. Participants enjoyed Ships and Sailors, Kickball, and basketball. Once everyone worked up their hunger, they ate a wonderful breakfast.
Then the delegates attended committees meetings where they had a wrap-up session of their activities. Next, the Kansas delegation traveled to the beautiful National Cathedral. This tourist attraction amazed everyone with articulate Gothic architecture and the awesome fact that Bob Dole was married there.
After touring the cathedral, the group trekked back to the 4-H Center to eat lunch in the Clover Cafe. The CWF delegates broke into discussion groups to comment on various issues in today's world. Then the Kansas 4-Hers gathered in their delegation room to formulate action plans for a community issue. Jeff, the PA, made the comment that Kansas has had the best action plans yet.
Once dismissed from delegation discussion, everyone changed and primped for cultural heritage night. This year the KS delegation dined at Toby's Dinner Theater, where they enjoyed delicious food and the production of "All Shook Up." The entertainment was filled with bight costumes, amazing voices and humor. While at the theater, Marshall was said to have been a gentleman, pulling out chairs and standing up for the ladies when they left the table. Before leaving for Toby's, there was a lint rolling party in Jared's room with Michael B. in charge and Gabriel, Marshall, and JD present.
Of course, there were a few moments to remember...Surprise Surprise, they involved Hope. Molly and Jared got her to believe the torch on the top of the Library of Congress was a spare for the one the Statue of Liberty holds. Also, during delegation action plan discussion, Hope thought Gabriel could really write in Japanese.
While our days in Washington DC are coming to an ed, the bonds of friendship everyone has made have just begun. The memories in this trip will last a lifetime and I know the friendships will too!

July 3rd

We just learned that the bus driver for the state Citizenship Washington Focus trip apparently died of natural causes sometime during the night. He was found in bed in his room this morning. Marietta Slater, our CWF Coordinator, says that he had been feeling badly yesterday, but didn’t request any treatment. We will not be releasing his name until we are sure his family has been properly notified.

The National 4-H Center arranged for another bus and driver to transport our delegation today. This morning they are at the National Cathedral as part of their planned itinerary.

Many of our young people had grown very fond of our driver on their cross country adventure during the past week. We understand it is an emotional time for them which means they are dealing with the issue in a healthy manner.

Kinkaid Motorcoach is arranging for another driver from Maryland to drive the coach. This driver will be taking the delegation on their scheduled itinerary tomorrow, bringing them home starting on Saturday and arriving in Kansas on Sunday.

Please keep our former driver and his family in your prayers as well as our youth, chaperones, and the subsitute bus driver who will be joining the group.

The 8th day of our adventure started bright and early when Hope set off the fire alarm, then she and her roommates proceeded to get locked out of their room. The day was started off with a big breakfast and we listened to a congressional session, where Kansans took 4 of the 7 spots. Unfortunately, we had to leave early for a tour at Capitol Hill. After walking many miles, we arrived at our destination and toured the Capitol. We were told we looked snazzy and like the interns who worked there and received special treatment. We went and saw Senator Roberts' and Senator Brownback's Offices and got to take pictures sitting in their desks. Each delegate received the opportunity to visit with their district representative office as well. Jessica B got lost in one of the offices and walk out of a door that said "private." After eating dinner at Union Station, we went to Twilight Tattoo. The US Army did drills and played instruments and sang. The girls were excited to take pictures with the soldiers. While at the show, Mary Beth was serenaded and later got a picture with the soldier. As we were driving back to the center, Jennifer reminded us to make sure we take our clothes off due to changing on the bus earlier. What she meant to say was make sure you take your clothes off the bus! A talent show was held and again Kansas was represented well having 5 of the 12 spots. We are so talented!!

July 1st

Our third day at the National 4-H Center began with an early breakfast. Then, it was off to the Arlington National Cemetery. Our first stop there was the Women in Military Service Memorial and Museum. Then we boarded a tram to take the tour of the Cemetery, which included the Kennedy's grave sites. Marietta also gave our tour guide, Norman, a Kansas 4-H pin! Another fascinating experience was viewing the changing of the guards ceremony. After agreeing it was a moving experience for all. We headed to Iwo Jima Memorial. On the way Jeff, our PA, read us a true story about the memorial and the men in it. Next came the WWII Memorial, with only about ten minutes there. Some people rushed to take pictures while others looked up family members on the kiosk. Cassadie thought a quick dip in the pool there would be refreshing, but decided against it instead. Then it was back to the center for workshops and committee meetings. The late afternoon was spent at the Derby playing various games where some got wet.
Dinner was eaten at the Clover Cafe and then the Delegation Think Tank and Reflections were held.
Some of today's excitements told at Reflections included learning the Squirrel and Lemmy Songs, taught to us by our PA, Jeff. Also Meredith and Emily B were told our 4-H Group was very respectful. Genna also found and photographed a stone with her family name on it at Arlington National Cemetery. It was also shared that several of our delegates are holding congressional spots and offices!
Today was also Garrett's birthday!! Hope you had a great day Garrett!
It is safe to say an amazing time was had by all Kansas CWF Delegates and Sponsors today!

June 30th

Our first full day at the 4-H center began at 7am where we enjoyed breakfast in the Clover Cafe. Immediately following breakfast, we boarded the coach on our quest for Mount Vernon. Along the way our trustee PA, Jeff, pointed out various landmarks and sites he thought suitable for our viewing pleasure. Upon arriving to Mount Vernon, we made a mad dash for the Washington Mansion. Following the mansion tour we were allowed to wander about and explore George Washington's estate. The view of the Potomac was absolutely breath taking from the mansion. Some other highlights were: the 16-sided barn, the slave quarters, the interactive movie and George Washington's dentures. Emily B also touched one of Martha's dresses and sounded an alarm at the museum. It gave us all a good laugh. Then we returned to the center for lunch and attended our assigned workshops and various committees. The entire CWF delegation gathered in the auditorium to listen and gain knowledge of citizenship and service from Chad Jeremy. Jeremy works for a national community service organization called, Americorps. Jeremy directs, plans, and carries out training for the Americorps volunteers. After enjoying a delectable feast, we once again boarded the coach for our night view of our nation's capital. Of course our educated and knowledgeable PA shared his vast knowledge with us at each monument. Our first stop was the Lincoln Memorial where we found a misspelled word on the wall. Next were the Korean and Vietnam war Memorials. Respectively many of us were astonished by the causality counts in those wars. When we got to the Jefferson Memorial a light shower fell upon us, but that didn't stop us from catching some breath taking views. The rain didn't detour us from our final destination, the FDR Memorial. Many have said the night view is the best part thus far.
On our way back to the center, we spotted gas for an unbelievable $4.33 per gallon. It's times like these when we truly think there's no place like home!

June 29th

We woke up refreshed today due to a much needed extra hour of sleep. Marshall started the day off with a bang when his cereal exploded all over the breakfast table. Although the explosion was exciting, the best thing about the morning was the return of our fearless driver, JACK. YAHOO!!! After loading the bus, we headed to Yorktown to learn about the amazing history of the town. At exactly 3:31, we pulled into the National 4-H Center. We made it the whole way with zero bus breakdowns.
Upon arriving, we met our awesome PA (Program Assistant), Jeff. After dinner we began an exciting evening of workshops, committee meetings, talent show auditions, and the legendary pin trade.
The following are some memorable moments of the day:
Hope was "punked" by Jared...twice. Once when he told her he killed a grizzly bear, and once when he convinced her that the movie, "The Perfect Man," was his own biography.
JD hit his head so hard he was sent to his knees.
Lauren got locked in the bathroom at the rest stop and nobody rescued her.
Gabe revealed his secret identity as a bird whisperer.
Jessica mistook the Buckeyes for Cow Pies.
Devon and Jared were elected into the delegate House of Representatives.
Tomorrow begins our first day in Washington DC. Everyone is super excited and we can't wait to continue on our adventure.

June 28th

On the road again...we started our trip bright and early this morning. Our first stop today was Williamsburg. Williamsburg was the capitol of Virginia during the 1700s. While there we shopped, learned and laughed. Many of our laughs involved the re-inactors. For example, a group of girls were talking to the soldiers and they told us that when they came over to America on the Porpoise, Andera said, "like a whale, right?" The soldiers also told her she would make a good wife "because she can't read or write." Then some of us tried to teach the soldiers the "Soulja Boy" dance.
We had many other blond moments as well. Shannon saw the wooden barricades and asked if they were old school bike racks. Hope listened to Jared when he told her to sample the 1600s ketchup which was actually hot sauce. Hope also said she would give Lane to the British soldiers in exchange for a picture with her.
After we left Williamsburg, we headed toward what we thought was the motel. Little did we know, Marietta had something different in mind...a surprise! WE WENT TO VIRGINIA BEACH!! Many people jumped into the ocean fully clothed. Some took pictures with the lifeguard. :)
Tonight we stayed in a 2 day old hotel in Gloucester. Jennifer, one of our sponsors, almost burned it down when she put her laptop on the bed. The feathers got a little too hot!! Each day on the road is getting better and better. We can't wait to see what comes next.

We started out the day leaving our hotel in Huntington, West Virginia two minutes early! Yeah us!!
Four hours into our morning drive, our bus suddenly coasted to the side of the road. There we sat for two hours while we waited for a mechanic to come fix the problem. However, before the mechanic showed up, flashing lights from a police car & firemen joined us on the shoulder. The policeman came and yelled at a select few for "waving" and Flagging them down from the top of the coach.
Finally we were rescued and we stopped for lunch in the nearest town in Virginia (Lexington). But to our surprise, about 15 minutes outside of town, the coach once again broke down. This time we waited for a new coach to come for nearly 3 hours!
While waiting on the sticky, hot bus we really had the chance to get to know each other. Unfortunately we could not visit Monticello though. Instead we experienced many funny moments bonding together. For example, Molly blowing bubbles, JD teaching Emily B how to throw punches, and Aaron showing his "evil squirrel" face. When Marietta told Joe the girls brought "27 Dresses" he thought she was talking about actual clothes while in fact she was talking about the movie. Joe's facial expression was priceless.
After the new coach and driver arrived we finished our drive to Richmond, Virginia where we enjoyed a short swim in our hotel pool. Hope found out that playing chicken doesn't mean jumping in while flapping your arms.
Although, we really miss our original bus driver, Jack, our third day on the trip turned out pretty awesome!

Our second day on the CWF trip began with a big buffet breakfast at the Drury Inn. Then we walked down the street to the St. Louis Arch. When we got there, we were able to wander around a little before riding to the top. We took the "egg-shaped" tram to the top and were able to get a birds-eye view of the flooded Mississippi. Reflecting on the arch: Mary got in trouble for taking a picture while loading the tram and many stated, "It was tall."
Then we met on the steps for a group picture. While we were on the steps, a news guy from Channel 4, was reporting on the flooding. JD, Marietta, Jared and Susan were interviewed by the news man. Check out http://www.kmov.com/ for their interviews.
We all loaded the bus for our long bus trip. Once aboard the two birthday delegates were sang to and given crowns to wear. "Happy Birthday Susan and Jared!" Later in the day the amazing Hope bought a birthday cake for them and shared with everyone on the bus.
Activities on the bus today included movie watching: Invincible, National Treasure, and What a Girl Wants as well as countless games of Pitch, Apples to Apples and Uno. Songs such as "Friends in Low Places" were sung as well.
Some of our stops included lunch at Arbys where we got to ring the bell and a bathroom break where a quick game of Reaction Ball was played.
We arrived at in Hunington, West Virginia around 8:00pm eastern time.
P.S. Jared was said to have taken full advantage of it being his birthday.

Today we left on our 12 day adventure. On the bus ride we were able to meet other delegates through a process like speed dating. As we approached St. Louis, we watched a video on how the St. Louis Arch was made. Finally, we arrived in St. Louis.
After checking in at the motel, Drury Inn, the group left for a night at Union Station. One highlight of the evening was visiting the Fudgery. The fudge makers would sing and make fudge at the same time. The man said he was surprised white people have rhythm. Also, there was the whispering arch which was whisperiffic according to Jared Marcuson. When we got back to the hotel and were getting ready to get on an elevator, we kindly let a women take the first elevator. She told us that her mother was a 4-H sewing leader for 10 years and would be very proud of us.
Everyone is looking forward to the exciting week ahead!!
